Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats

"CROWNS, a stand-up-and-testify musical based on the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry, focuses on Yolanda, a young Brooklyn girl who is sent down South to stay with her grandmother. As Yolanda encounters her grandmother and her grandmother's friends in the rituals of preparing for and going to Sunday church service, she begins to discover connections to older traditions and a deeper spirituality. CROWNS is a soul-stirring tribute to the unique cultural phenomenon that fuses faith with fashion by celebrating African-American women and their church hats." --text from http://www.mcphotog.com/

Crowns run October 8-18, in the LSC-Center for the Arts, Main Stage Theatre. Visit the Box Office for more information.

"Every 13 minutes, a new name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list. Every day, 17 people die waiting for a life-saving organ transplant." Currently, over 100,000 patients in the United States need an organ transplant. (data from https://www.donatelifetexas.org/TXDear_Secure/Facts.aspx)

Ariana Montelongo of LifeGift gave a fascinating and informative presentation on the importance of life saving organ/tissue donation. "LifeGift is a not-for-profit organ procurement organization that recovers organs and tissue for individuals needing transplants in 109 Texas counties in North, Southeast and West Texas."

If you would like to become a registered organ/tissue donor, visit Donate Life: Texas to sign up. The registry is the only legally official way to make your organ/tissue donor wishes known. Note: the registry became official in 2006, any registry joined before that is not legally valid, including Organ Donor stickers on Texas drivers' licenses. Without joining the new registry, your wish to be an organ/tissue donor can be overturned by your surviving family.
